چکیده

Aim To identify priority areas for in situ conservation and collection of germplasm ex backup crop wild relative (CWR) diversity the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region as part an action plan use region's important CWR diversity. Location SADC region. Methods Diversity, gap climate change analyses at species ecogeographic levels were undertaken 113 regional taxa. Results hotspots identified Eswatini (former Swaziland), Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania Zimbabwe. Twenty-one per cent regionally occur exclusively outside existing protected (PAs), 50% are not conserved situ, 64% predicted to be negatively impacted by change. A total 120 PAs 13 countries containing populations likely persist future 80% taxa about these taxa; remaining can additional 151 complementary sites 11 countries. Democratic Republic Congo, Madagascar, Africa contain conserving which no negative impact is predicted. Priority provinces Bas-Congo (Democratic Congo) Cabinda (Angola) threatened should collected urgently conservation. Other rich that located Angola, Eswatini, Mauritius, Main conclusions We could form basis Network In Situ Conservation CWR. also selected filling gaps collections field survey.

Title : CWRML : representing crop wild relative conservation and use

Background: Crop wild relatives are wild species that are closely related to crops. They are valuable as potential gene donors for crop improvement and may help to ensure food security for the future. However, they are becoming increasingly threatened in the wild and are inadequately conserved, both in situ and ex situ. Information about the conservation status and utilisation potential of crop...

Spatial incongruence among hotspots and complementary areas of tree diversity in southern Africa

Methods In this study, we used data on the dated phylogeny and geographical distribution of 1400 tree species in southern Africa to map regional hotspots of species richness (SR), phylogenetic diversity (PD), phylogenetic endemism (PE), species endemism (CWE), and evolutionary distinctiveness and global endangerment (EDGE). In addition, we evaluated the efficiency of hotspots in capturing compl...

Enhancing the Conservation of Crop Wild Relatives in England

Humans require resilient, rapidly renewable and sustainable supplies of food and many other plant-derived supplies. However, the combined effects of climate change and population growth compromise the provision of these supplies particularly in respect to global food security. Crop wild relatives (CWR) contain higher genetic diversity than crops and harbour traits that can improve crop resilien...

Conservation science and elephant management in southern Africa

THE PREVAILING INCREASE IN ELEPHANT numbers across areas of southern Africa raises concern for their impact on biological diversity. Several approaches to elephant management focus on limiting numbers to alleviate these consequences. However, landscape fragmentation, fences, water supplementation as well as the shape and size of some conservation areas restrict range use and intensify the effec...

Endophytic fungal diversity of Fragaria vesca, a crop wild relative of strawberry, along environmental gradients within a small geographical area

BACKGROUND Fungal endophytes are highly diverse ubiquitous asymptomatic microorganisms, some of which appear to be symbiotic. Depending on abiotic conditions and genotype of the plant, the diversity of endophytes may confer fitness benefits to plant communities. METHODS We studied a crop wild relative (CWR) of strawberry, along environmental gradients with a view to understand the cultivable ...
